In preparing for my 2015 weddings, my brides and I have been meeting with lots of photographers lately. Something that keeps coming up is how photographers love their jobs more today than they did years ago. I have to jump in at that point in the conversation. Fact for them or not, I interject that it must be because today's weddings are slightly more creative and unique than years ago. Couples want their personality to show through. They just don't want a "nice" experience for their guests. Everything from the ceremony to the food selections and the decor is custom and meaningful and that is my favorite part of the job.
One of the wow factors that I have been working with more over the recent years is ceiling treatments. Especially striking for event spaces with soaring ceilings, it's the unexpected element when guests enter a ceremony or reception. Years ago I started simple. One of my brides had hoped her September reception would be on the water with guests dancing under a twinkling tent. The venue however had just built a beautiful new ballroom and views of the water through the windows would have to do. But if draped and twinkling ceiling she wanted, draped and twinkling ceiling she would get. We transformed the ballroom space to create the perfect atmosphere.
For a more recent wedding at the Corcoran, the bride wanted a little bit of sparkle to bring down the high ceilings over her guests as they dined. The drama of hundreds of crystal strands was jaw dropping to guests as they found their seats for dinner.
Bringing a garden inside? No problem! We've got a ceiling treatment for that. Greens and Wisteria hanging from a tray ceiling serves to fill a cold, noticeable void and camouflages an out of place chandelier for this garden tea party reception.
From paper lanterns to 5,000 ribbons with crystals on the ends, ceiling treatments are transforming more than tents these days and are adding drama and character to the usually forgotten about space above. Up next? I'm working on hanging lucite planks with pillar candles and delicate butterflies fluttering overhead.
